Addiction as the Cross We Bear [Sorrowful Mysteries]
In recovery, we allow our addiction to die on the cross instead of our mind and body.
Addiction is the cross we bear in our lives and in our recovery.
An addict’s cross can appear as hangovers and withdrawals, physical and mental illness, strained or lost relationships and work opportunities, financial instability, overdoses, and the risk of death caused by reckless addiction-related behaviors.
Trapped in the cycle of addiction, the weight of that cross becomes heavier and heavier, until it eventually becomes too heavy to bear.
As addicts, we could either die an early physical death or lose all of the good in our lives.
Or, we can choose to begin the recovery process.
In recovery, we allow our addiction to die on the cross instead of our mind and body.
Our life as an addict must die to give way to our own personal resurrection.
Jesus walked the path of death and resurrection to show us the Way.
The road of recovery and personal transformation that we begin to experience is not unlike Christ’s experiences as he walked a path of suffering to his own death and resurrection.
In recovery, we begin to transform and rebuild our lives in sobriety, with our Higher Power as our center focus instead of our addiction.
