The Joy of the Recovery Journey [Joyful Mysteries]
Once we rebuild our lives on a more stable, sober foundation, the true joy of a balanced and fulfilling life can take the place of the sadness and emptiness that once drove us to our addictions.
Joy is a concept that can seem foreign to the cycle of addiction.
When still using, we may have felt a rush of dopamine from the addiction itself, and from the connections we made with others while we were in those addictive cycles.
However, the painful consequences of our addiction often exceed the “joy” we may feel in any particular moment.
Even once we have made the decision to embrace a life of sobriety on the path to recovery, the healing journey itself is not always joyful and full of love and light.
The recovery journey includes less joyful moments when we must face the consequences of our past decisions, heal past heartaches, and rebuild our lives from a more stable foundation.
However, once we do rebuild that foundation, the true joy of a more balanced and fulfilling life can take the place of the sadness and emptiness that once drove us to our addictions.
Sobriety does not suddenly solve all of our life’s problems.
But sobriety can make those problems, and our lives, more manageable.
Recovery from addiction can transform what once brought fear and anxiety into hope and self-confidence.
That is the promise of joy through the recovery journey.
